Focus Cues
Focus Cues
Purpose for Players:
To train the mind and body to work together in a consistent way, using breathing, eye fixation, and internal mantras to sharpen focus.
How Coaches Should Deliver:
Breathing Patterns
Explain: Steady breathing regulates heart rate and calms nerves.
Drill:
1. Before a throw, players inhale deeply through the nose for 4 seconds, hold for 1 second, then exhale slowly through the mouth for 6 seconds.
2. Repeat twice before stepping to the oche.
Coach Tip: Use a “sync and throw” rhythm—coach counts silently with the player until they can self-regulate.
Eye-Fixation Points
Explain: Where the eyes go, the darts follow.
Drill:
1. Player identifies a specific pixel-sized spot on the target (e.g., the exact center of the treble 20).
2. Maintain visual lock for 2 seconds before drawing the dart back.
Coach Tip: Avoid letting the eyes wander to the scoreboard or surroundings mid-throw.
Internal Mantras
Explain: A short phrase focuses the mind and keeps thoughts positive.
Examples: “Line it, launch it” or “Still… smooth… strike.”
Drill:
1. Player silently repeats their mantra during setup.
2. Coach listens for changes in pace or posture that signal the mantra is working.
