Set-up Shots and Leave Preference

KEY CONCEPTS :

What are Set-up Shots?

Set-up shots are scores thrown with the intention of leaving an ideal finish on the next visit.

Why are They Important?

They create pressure on opponents by leaving a strong outshot.

They ensure the player doesn’t block their preferred doubles.

They prevent awkward finishes (like 62 or 58 for beginners).

DETAILS :

1. Identify Ideal Leaves
D20 (40), D16 (32), and D12 (24) are most common for right-handed players.
D18 (36) and D10 (20) are also good options.

2. Teach Set-up Zones
Example: On 91, many players go T17 (51) to leave 40 rather than T19 (57) leaving 34.

3. Practice Drills
Leave Targeting: Start at 200, aim to leave 32 or 40 within three darts.
Simulation Rounds: Play from 121 down, focusing on your “favorite double.”

4. Adjust for Player Preference
Some prefer D16 over D20 due to comfort and vision.
Teach players to avoid “bogey numbers” (169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162, 159).
